Unique Word Counter

Paste any text to see the frequency of every unique word — total count, unique count, and a sortable table. Runs entirely in your browser.

Instructions

Get the frequency of each unique word in any text. This tool is particularly useful for writers, researchers, and SEO specialists looking to optimize their content by understanding word usage patterns and ensuring keyword relevance.

  1. Paste your text into the input field above.
  2. Click "Count Words" to analyze the text.
  3. Review the word frequency table to see the number of occurrences for each unique word, ranked from most to least frequent.
  4. Use the results to refine your content, ensuring optimal keyword usage and relevance.

Alongside the table you get two totals — Total words and Unique words — and a plain-text output of every word and its count, tab-separated, which you can copy straight into a spreadsheet column.

Everything runs in your browser. Your text is never uploaded to a server.

How Words Are Counted

Counting is case-insensitive: SEO, Seo, and seo are the same word and share a single row. Text is split on anything that isn't a letter, a number, an apostrophe, or a hyphen, which means punctuation and line breaks separate words, while contractions and hyphenated compounds stay intact — don't counts as one word, not two, and well-known counts as one word, not two. Numbers count as words. Rows are sorted by count, highest first, with ties broken alphabetically.

Use the Unique Word Counter Tool to...

  • Conduct textual analysis for academic papers or research articles.
  • Prepare and edit speeches or presentations by identifying overused words.
  • Optimize your content for SEO by checking frequently used words and ensuring balanced keyword density.
  • Improve the readability and relevance of your content for both users and search engines.
  • Check the outputs of LLMs to ensure that the generated text features a variety of words but does not overuse any word or phrase.

The Impact of Word Frequency on SEO

Understanding the frequency of specific words within your content is crucial for SEO. On one hand, it's important to ensure that your target keywords are being used appropriately. On the other hand, it's important to watch out for overuse that might be flagged as spammy keyword stuffing. This tool helps you maintain a natural keyword density, enhancing the relevance and readability of your page for both search engines and users.

I also use this tool to compare the keyword density among competing pages. It's also helpful to identify the search terms competitor pages are targeting in their content. This can be especially powerful in conjunction with my Keyword Stemming Tool — stem a page's text first, then count it, and the variations of a keyword (run, running, runs) collapse into a single row instead of splitting their weight across three.

One caveat when you read the table: the most frequent words in any English text are almost always function words — the, a, and, to, of. Nothing is filtered out, so expect those at the top and start reading from wherever the meaningful terms begin.
